Chapter One
The night would be cold and bleak, but somewhere hidden deep in the shadows of the night was a creature waiting for the moon to rise high in the sky. The sun was her dreaded fate; the moon was her best friend. The shadows hid her hiding place as twilight soon faded to night she stretched her longs legs and stood. Ebony locks drifted from the crown of her head and to the midsection of her back, eyes the color of faded emeralds glittered as she glanced up at the moon above. A grin, a flash of fangs, and anyone could tell she wasn’t human. Though her legs were long she moved with more grace then a large feline. This at heart is exactly what she was, a feline in all its grace and more. Walking the dead streets of a city long forgotten by mortals she sighed, bored was all she seemed to gain from this ghost town,. The others of her type that resided here were alright, not much fun once you’ve done almost everything from playing board games to full out rough housing millions of times over.
Sayuri longed to venture from the confines of the ghost town. But how, how could she find a way to wander the roads that led to the mortals beds? By night of course, but here in her home she knew where to hide then the sun threatened to burn away at her moon colored flesh and turn it to ashes at her feet. Having to find new places to hide that were like the old hospital morgue would be difficult as would be leaving her loving companion. Having had the large black steed from when she was mortal she couldn’t stand to leave him behind in the land of the living, so she changed him. It had been hard on the stallion’s body for the first few years but now he could out run the fastest cars and best any horse you placed in his path. Sesin was her beloved, no one else had ever been able to break her cold hate filled heart the way the black stallion could. Sayuri prayed to the gods of her time that she would manage to stay by herself, for the most part, and never have to depend on a male to bring her life a little joyfulness.
Sesin walked at his masters side, head tilted so his dark brown eyes were locked on Sayuri he nickered and nuzzled that velvety nose against her upper arm as if asking her to talk to him, to tell him just what she was thinking and what was troubling her. Sayuri let her lips curl up, not in a snarl but in a smile, most of her kind didn’t remember how to smile. Most hated what they had become, but not Sayuri. She had dreamed of becoming one of the undead from the time she was a small child, but she would have loved to live without the dreadful pain the first few years brought with her changing body. The only thing able to bring that child like smile to her face was that of Sesin. The crunching of leaves ended when she stopped and flung her arms around Sesin broad neck in the form of a hug.
“What do you say we get out of this place? Find some sort of excitement?” Sayuri cooed to her loving partner. Sesin tossed his large head up, that thick wavy forlocke tossing up, he continued to toss his head as if to tell her “Yes”. A soft giggle left those gentle vocals. Nodding in agreement with Sesin she turned and dashed towards her resting place. The doors sprung open as her and Sesin dashed through them. Dashing down the halls of the old hospital she would race down the steps and into the old morgue, once there the light would flick on. A grin soon curved her lips as she heard the gentle sound of Sesins hooves on the tiles behind her. As she began to throw her belongings into a bag she hummed a tune she remembered from long ago when she was a mortal.
Every now and again a night angel would be created and able to remember anything and everything from their past life. But it was rare, so to the fact that here in the ghost town the young girl lived she was the only one that remembered anything from her past life. That sayuri lived she was the only one that was able to recall her past. Some say it’s the fact that they believed that no matter what anyone else told them that the night angels were always among the living, or at least the night lovers. Others say it is because it was already buried deep within their genes of spirit and body. Some say it’s like the mortals, there are the normal’s and of course the freaks. Whatever the reason they were a gift to the others.
Her day dreaming ended as Sesin pranced in place, those large grace filled hooves sounding like the ticking of a clock as he grew restless. Sayuri laughed softly, the sound was as soft as a tiny silver bell, and as gentle. With one fluid movement she had the saddle upon his back and the bridle over his nose and strapped in place. Tying her bags onto the saddle she pulled Sesins nose up to her lips and kissed the velvet like surface. Other night angels stared at her strange actions; some even asked what she was up to. All the questions did was earned them a hiss of annoyance.
Slowly she walked up the tile hallways of the old hospital, her home. The souls of her boots made not a single sound against the cool surface, and soon you could hardly hear Sesin behind her. They matched in grace and beauty. Together they were like the moon and the night, a perfect match. Stepping into the cool night air she closed her eyes and inhaled the cool October night deeply. The scent of her kind and the wet leaves that scattered the ground met her senses. Before anyone could even blink she had leaped up onto the back of her beloved partner. Taking one last look around her old home she gently nudged the heel of her boot against Sesins side and he bolted. The cool hair clutched at the length of her silken hair, it bit at her nose and her cheeks. But, the cold had no effect on her as it would a human.
Together they ran as one, a girl and her horse, both creatures and belongings of the night and the moon above. With each powerful stride that came from beneath her she searched for a place to rest during the deathly rays of the sun. She had always hated the sun, since the time she was a little girl until the time she had been changed. The many sounds that flooded her ears was so strange compared to the sounds of the city. Amazed her attention began to wander, her eyes closed and she was lost in the night allowing sesin to take them away from the ghost town and to a new home. Mind running away with her she was startled when Sesin slid to a wild stop beneath her. Most would have fallen over the horses crown but not Sayuri she sat her seat perfectly, until she saw the suns rays slowly chasing away the stars. Franctly her eyes began to search for a place large enough that the burning rays could not touch Sesin or herself. Spinning in a wild frenzing she laughed in mock joyfulness when she saw the small abandoned house a few feet away.
Jumping from Sesins back she raced towards it, of course her beloved followed close at her heels. Breaking through the front door of the complex she raced towards the stairs into the basement. Steps taking two at a time she searched and found only two windows. As Sesin slowly made his way down the tiny steps she tore away her jacket and hung it over one of the windows, then after she had done this she turned to Sesin and removed his bit and bridle then his saddle, the pitch black saddle pad became the next makeshift curtain. Grinning as the room became dark she moved to the corner farthest from the windows. Sesin moved with her, he laid his large body up around her keeping the girl safe as she sighed. He knew her thoughts and this is why he nuzzled her.
Eyes closed she traced the tiny star that was set into the ring on her left hand, it had been a gift from when she was a human. Her first love, her love hadn’t always belonged to Sesin, no that came after Avell. Avell had been the first person to catch her attention all during her Junior year. Sayuri had been walking through the commons with one of her friends talking and laughing her attention focused on their conversation. Before she had time to even dance out of the way she had walked right into Avell, a flush of crimson had flooded her pale cheeks and deepened when she heard him chuckle. After that day they had become joined at the hip as many seemed to say when referring to the couple.
As weeks turned into months prom rolled around the corner and of course they went together. During their song, which Avell had requested, he pulled gently from their embrace only to present her with the tiny silver ring that she knew he always wore. In the center was a single star, it has always caught her attention and she had loved it almost as much as she had loved him but nothing compared to him. As he presented her with the ring he whispered sweet promises to her. The ring was not an engagement ring, not yet, this was a simple promise ring for what he would do for her in the future and how he would treat her.
The summer after their junior year he had taken her on a romantic dinner for her 18th birthday. Once the meal was finished he led her back to his car, offering her a charming smile he draped a silk scarf over her eyes and whispered for her not to peek at where he was taking her. Avell always kept Sayuri on her toes when it came to surprising her with special trinkets. But, where was he taking her this time and why would he need to blindfold her? She giggled as her thoughts ran wild with different ideas. Soon the music in the cab of the car cut to silence and he left the car. Hearing the door beside her open she knew his arms would be wrapped around her soon. He had lifted her up and into his arms carrying her into, what was this a barn? Inhaling deeply she blinked behind the scarf that hid her vision, she could smell the hay and the clean leather and she could hear the soft swishing of tails and the tiny nickers of the horses that occupied the space.
Avell had set her gently on her feet outside one of the stalls and removed the blindfold from those faded emerald like eyes. As he told her to open her eyes she gasped at the sight. In the stall in front of her was Sesin, a black fresian stallion a vermillion ribbon tired around his well muscled neck. The soft sound of Sesins whinny woke her from her day dreaming. She curled herself up next to him and let her eyes drift shut, just as the first few rays threated to reach her skin, blocked by the makeshift curtains. Her dreams pulled her into a death like sleep and freed her from the day and back into a world of perfection.
