(this is also my DA journal)
Then You shouldn't do it.
For Example:
Today, I went to check on my dads/aunts horses after school then went to where my horse was. My gut was telling me that i shouldn't ride today, but i have to try to ride everyday if i want to keep my horse. Well we were riding down the road and everything was just fine. We road down Road C Then into the small subdivision L. Well then when i came back out onto road C, I went into the field across from the Subdivision L. My horse Dutchess got a bit hyper because there are two horses over there but they were in their stalls this afternoon.
So i rode her back to Road C and turned her so we could start going further down the road and on with our journey. Well, Long story short (i will put more detail at the bottom of this), The horse flies started bothering her, and she turned an odd way and the saddle slipped and she spooked and took of at a gallop. I finally fell off and tried to hold the reigns but to no avail. I last saw her running across to the otherside of Road C infront of a car. Well the car stopped before hitting her and drove over to help me find my glasses and make sure it I was OK then he left. Then a mini-van and a woman pulled up next to me as i was Heading up Road C and said that she had seen my horse heading up towards the highway. I said "Ok Thanks" and she drove away. (Road C is right off the highway and her pasture is on the Highway so i knew she would be OK at that point.) Then another man pulled up and said he had seen my horse going across the yard and up the side of the highway to her pasture and he offered me a lift there and stopped so i could pic up my stirrup that she had torn off.
I got to her pasture and the pasture owner met us out front saying she had called my mother (who I had also called earlier) and said my mother was on her way w/ my bros and cousin's that she was watching, But my horse was down. So I took off running around my truck afraid to see the worst. She had the saddle half tucked under her and was panting heavily but was otherwise OK as far as I could see on her side. The Landlady held her down while i checked her legs and then her face and switched out her bridle for a halter. Then we tried to get the saddle off and I had to cut it off sadly. Then it took me about 5 panic stricken minutes to get Dutchess to finally stand and I looked her over again and the landlady walked her so i could check for a Limp. There was only a slight one on her back left leg but i think that that is when she had run into the neighbors yard as they have an odd angled, steep hill. When my mom finally pulled up and rest assured me that my horse was OK i broke down into tears and put my mare back out to pasture after making her walk around to cool down.
So yes, both me and my horse are OK. I only have a slightly scraped lower back (which hurts like nobodies business) and a few sore muscles in my shoulder and leg, but I'll live
Now for more Details on how I felt during certain parts starting at the beggining of the fall.
> I had thought that i would be able to fix it if she would stop, but no, she took off at a gallop. I only managed to get into the grass for a softer landing and was quite frightened about my foot getting hung in one of the stirrups. Well my glasses had fallen off when i fell and rolled, So when i struggled onto my hand and knees, but was not able to move any further, i noticed a black and brown blob (my horse) running infront of a big white blob (the car) and i was so scared and felt so useless!! That is a feeling i NEVER EVER EVER want to feel again. I don't know if i thought it, or actually screamed her name, as i watched her run across the road and infront of that car. And a huge relief washed over me when i heard the car screech to a stop and the man running over to help me.
> When I was walking up the road, I was panicked about the fate of my horse. She was galloping very fast from what I had been told, And i was very worried because the highway was very busy at this hour. And a great relief washed over me when the man said she had cut into the neighbors yard, and I realized she was heading home and would be safely waiting for me. That feeling of relief... I cannot even explain.
> When I was told she was laying down, and had been for a few minutes, I almost had a second heartattack of the day. I ran around my truck, since it was obscuring my view, and almost froze at the sight. She was lying on her left side, Panting with white streaks on her legs, side and neck and her reigns under her face and her legs looked a tad odd in their positions. I walked over slowly and stroked her neck and face telling her everything would Be OK. And that momma was here and would make her feel better. Then the landlady talked to her and knealt on her neck so she wouldn't try to stand as I checked her legs one at a time fearing the worst. It felt as if my heart was being ripped out seeing her like that, and was glad that it was only the saddle blocking her legs that had kept her from getting up. I am not sure what had made her go down, Maybe exhaustion, but that is one fact I do not wish to dwell on
I may try to draw pictures from my point of view of what had happened if anybody is interested. xD But what I do know, is that my horse is safe, and she will be alright. I don't care If i have to pay a good bit to get the saddle fixed/cleaned and a new girth, I would rather have my saddle in pieces rather then my horse in the ground.
