"It's all in your head," Mios' mother said, speaking softly to her small child of only seven curled under the defensive duvet "nothing will get you." Her hand hovered over the light switch as she watched her daughters terrified eyes lock on hers, and Mio's bottom lip quiver. It was hard, seeing her child in pain and they had this conversation almost every night, but nothing got through to the child. She was hopeless. After a quick flick of nimble fingers, the electricity cut out and the room lost all light once her mother had closed the door. The last amount of light was banished from the room.
Darkness. It closed around Mio suddenly, compressing her body into as small a space as she could curl up into. Everything looked scarier in the dark. The twisted shapes of what were fairies and elves merrily dancing on the bed cover, the spindly leafs which sprouted from the spider plants pot. A street light flickered on outside and a orange haze filtered through the curtains to illuminate certain aspects of the room like the dolls house in the corner with windows blackened and a eery white doll face looking from behind one of its curtains.
Pattering sounds came from the wall to her left, beside the window. Mios body tensed, and she slowly turned her head. There, perched upside down on the wall was a small, innocent spider. It's eight legs streached out beside it. The beast was as big as a small yogurt pot and showed of no threat to the girl under the duvet. But it's presence... With a large black body, with a glowing yellow abdomen that pulsed with light. Its legs covered in fine hairs, which rippled as the legs tapped one by one against the plaster. The spider then looked up from its originally downwards glare and straight at the white, tense body. All eight of the beady black eyes fixed on Mio. Fangs extending from what looked like a mouth, it leaned out towards her and she could almost feel then piercing into her skin then the large monstrosity vanished. The spider and all of what happened, gone as she returned to the orange tinted bedroom.
Mio looked around, frantic. Something that large could not just vanish, things like that did not just vanish. Yet it did. A large beast like that gone from vision and reality. She was left alone again to the silence of the room. Turning over in the small single bed, she faced the other wall, not daring to turn back around and see if the spider had returned to play tricks with her. She'd rather not see what was approaching, if anything was.
There in front of the soft blue eyes of Mio was another dark shape, hidden in the corner in what appeared to be a crouch. Its knees were tucked firmly into the persons chest and there back was shoved firmly against the wall. Slowly, the head peeled back and creaked round, locking eye contact with her. Its mouth was large, red and in a crooked smile with teeth sticking out in odd directions. The skin was pale and all of what were in the eyes was a shiny dark mess.
"What do we have here?" its voice was a low drone and curled itself up in Mios delicate ears. Breaking from the small crouch it was in, towering above the bed on long, lanky legs. taking a confident stride the person edged closer.
"A simple little child left alone in the dark? Did mummy say nothing was going to hurt you?" the voice turned into a chuckle and then swept swiftly into a firm and serious tone "Well, mummy lied, didn't she because I'm here." Taking another step forward- what presumably was a he- was right beside her head. The man was so tall his knees reached the top of her bed and his head had to bow to stay upright in the room. Slowly maneuvering a hand into his right jacket pocket and pulling out a small barbers blade, which unfolded smoothly with a quick flick. Mio tensed and her body stiffened. She wanted to scream for her mother, but would that aggravate the monster stood before her, causing it to lash out quicker. So she lay there unable to move, choked up on unsaid words and unshed tears. A fine arm raised and the blade glinted in what little light was coming from the streetlight before coming down quickly. Mio winced but felt no pain. Her eyes fluttered half open, and there was no one in front of her. The crazed man had vanished just as the spider had. Taking no chances of seeing another appearance, she quickly closed her eyes and blocked out the outside world. But the peace that came was short lived and soon she was opening her eyes shakily.
Banging of pans from downstairs grew loud suddenly. As if it was coming upstairs, trying to wake the inhabitants of the small house. Suddenly her door burst open and before her was another human figure, this time a woman. All you could see was her black silhouette on a bright background from the landings light.
"Ahh, my dear," the familiar voice echoed throughout the room. Her mothers. "Its all... in your... head." With a final choke the dark body fell to the side into a heap and another one took its place. A pointed object loosely in his left hand. Mio lost it now, here body shaking violently and tears streaming down her face like an endless monsoon. The dark figure stepped into the golden haze, revealing a cloaked man with blood dripping from his hands and the corner of his mouth bleeding. Screaming out in terror, Mio dragged the duvet over her head, hiding herself from the fate which was soon to come. With a sudden crunch and a deafening scream the events were over. A shady man scuttled from the pink, fairy themed bedroom and out of the cottage. Leaving all behind but one thing, a lonesome child with fears too deep in her head to solve, and a cry too heartwarming to silence.
